This step is important – throughout this process, we do not want to save the source file we’re working on – we’re going to be using the (thankfully) re-introduced ‘Save As’ feature. Notice in the bottom half of the dialogue box there is confirmation of both the new pixel size and the file size in Kb. ![]() You can leave the resolution setting to whatever it is. Unless you created your own image on a 1024×1024 or other square canvas, uncheck the ‘Scale proportionally’ box, and type ‘1024’ in both the Width and Height boxes. Create a new folder on your Desktop called ‘iconbuilder.iconset’ (without the quote marks). However, as I said earlier it’s technically fairly straightforward, you just need to take care to do it correctly. This is actually the most tedious part of the process and you must be careful to carry it out exactly or your final product won’t work. Our next step then, is to use Preview to create our own iconset – all the required sizes and with the correct names so that Mac OS X will understand what to do with them. Hence, the file extension ‘icns’ (and not ‘icn’), with the ‘s’ for ‘set’. png files, of different sizes from 16pixels all the way up to 1024pixels, and is known as an ‘iconset’. icns file is actually a composite of ten. If you’re re-using a stock image and it’s not in the right pixel size, don’t worry, we’ll get to that shortly. If you’re starting from scratch in GIMP or other software, then use a base pixel size of 1024×1024 or 516×516. There’s a wealth of stock or public domain images on sites like DeviantArt and elsewhere. Alternatively, you can use or modify an existing image. If you want to create your own, you can use a free app like GIMP or Inkscape if you don’t have commercial software like Photoshop or Illustrator. The first thing you’re going to need is a. And the best news: you don’t need any commercial software, and the process – though lengthy – is not technically demanding. Wouldn’t it be great if you could change them for something to your taste? In this tutorial, I’m going to take you through the basic steps of creating your own icons in png format, converting them into Apple’s icns format, and installing them into the application so that they display correctly throughout Finder and the Desktop. But you'll hopefullyĪppreciate what a solution to a differential equation looks like. Just one differential equation represented in different ways. Indeed are solutions for I guess this is really So I'm just gonna give youĮxamples of solutions here. So we can take a look at what some of these solutions could look like. Something like any of these three, which really represent the same thing, what would a solution actually look like? Actually let me move And so the solutions, or the solution, is going to be a function Here it's a relationshipīetween a function and its derivatives. The solutions to this algebraic equation are going to be numbers, Might look something like, and I'll just write up a simple quadratic. Maybe an algebraic equation that you're familiar with. Maybe I shouldn't say traditional equation,ĭifferential equations have been around for a while. It's important to contrast this relative to a traditional equation. Another way we could write it if we said that y is a function of Is equal to three times y, this right over here isĪ differential equation. If I were to write that the second derivative of y plus two times the first derivative of y Let's see here is an example of differential equation, For now let's just thinkĪbout or at least look at what a differential equation actually is. Modeling and simulating phenomena and understanding And as we'll see, differential equations are super useful for This may evaluate in differentiation solver for cross verification of answer and its steps online. Now introduce ourselves to the idea of a differential equation. It is written mathematically as d/dx (e x) = e x. Since the derivative of an exponential function with base "e" equals e x, the differentiation of e to the power x is equivalent to e to the power x itself. For such students, derivative solver is the great tool for calculating derivative of a trigonometric function. The derivative of cos 2x is the the derivative of trignometric function which is somehow complex for students that cannot remember trignometric identities. In addition, we find the metastable states of green, blue, and red panels. The globally optimal ground state occurs when the panels are face to face with no separation. ( C) Plot of the range for spontaneous binding (normalized by the dipole separation within a panel) versus Γ, the shaking acceleration normalized by g. These spacers create a steric repulsion at a surface separation corresponding to the vertical dashed line. We glue spacers onto the magnetically patterned layers to further enhance the selectivity of the panel interactions. Solid lines are experimental measurements, and dashed lines are results from analytic calculations in which interactions between any 2 pairs of magnets that are not in the same magnetically patterned layer are considered. ![]() Here, we normalize the separation by the lateral dipole separation within a magnetically patterned layer. ( B) Magnetic force between 2 magnetically patterned layers of the same pattern at the optimal binding orientation (sketch in Inset) versus the center-to-center layer separation. Encoding information into magnetic panels to generate specific interactions. To develop complementary platforms that overcome such challenges at the microscale and nanoscale, it is necessary to develop strategies based on building blocks that encode binding interactions that are both stronger and longer-ranged.įig. Moreover, the resulting materials are inherently soft since thermal fluctuations are necessary for these systems to explore their phase space and arrive at optimal binding configurations. Despite tremendous successes achieved by these pioneering studies, these binding strategies typically only function at small size scales and often suffer from long annealing times, as elements must diffuse into near contact to interact ( 20, 21). These latter strategies have been successful at generating complex structures ranging from clathrate colloidal crystals ( 19) to complex polyhedra and nanoscale DNA teddy bears ( 14). Other pioneering studies incorporated enthalpic interactions through DNA-mediated colloidal ( 2, 6– 12) and DNA origami/Lego self-assembly platforms ( 13– 18). For example, previous work has shown that entropic bonds arising from particle shape alone can lead to formation of complex crystal structures ( 3– 5). At the microscale and nanoscale, such rules have been encoded through entropic and enthalpic interactions ( 1– 3). Programmable self-assembly of complex arrangements from simple units requires encoding local interaction rules into building blocks to select a desired final structure. We envision that magnetic encoding of assembly instructions into primary structures of panels, strands, and nets will lead to the formation of secondary and even tertiary structures that transmit information, act as mechanical elements, or function as machines on scales ranging from the nano to the macro. Using a centimeter-sized version of these panels, we demonstrate 3 canonical hallmarks of assembly: controlled polymerization of individual building blocks assembly of 1-dimensional strands made of panels connected by elastic backbones into secondary structures and hierarchical assembly of 2-dimensional nets into 3-dimensional objects. Because the ratios of the different panel-binding energies are scale-invariant, this approach can, in principle, be applied down to the nanometer scale. ![]() Our building blocks consist of panels with different patterns of magnetic dipoles that are capable of specific binding. Here, we introduce a platform based on magnetic encoding of information to drive programmable self-assembly that works across length scales. Programmable self-assembly of smart, digital, and structurally complex materials from simple components at size scales from the macro to the nano remains a long-standing goal of material science. |
